POLICIES OF MUSEUM

Entrance●lntention
  The Museum of Modern Art, Shiga intends to aid the citizens of Shiga Prefecture in deepening their understanding of the fine arts through the appreciation of outstanding works of art from Japan and abroad, to foster the development of their aesthetic sense and to enrich their lives.


●Location
  The museum is surrounded by a large Japanese garden and is beautifully located in the suburban Seta hillside faceing Lake Biwa and Hira and Hiei mountain ranges.
  Shiga Prefectural Library and Shiga Prefectural Center for Archaeological Operation are only a short walk away.


●Permanent CoIlection
  Acquisitions are divided into three main categories.

  1. Modern Japanese style paintings especially works of artists who are related to Japan Art Institute(Nihon bijutsu−in).
  2. Works related to Shiga Prefecture.
  3. Contemporary art especially in the postwar U.S.A. and Japan.


  Works selected and acquired in these categories are on rotation in the gallery for permanent collection. There is a special coner established for work of the famous woman artist Yuki Ogura, a master of Japanese style painting.


●Temporary Exhibitions
  The museum monitors a broad range of trends in the art world selecting representative work for temporary exhibitions.


●Research
  The museum makes researches on various art works, seeks to identify optimum display and preservation techniques and to promote educational services.


●Educational Activities
  This activities include services as lectures on art, seminars, film showings, original museum publications and a variety of art reference materials including books and video tapes.


●Gallery
  Rental space for group or individual shows is available to promote creative activities on the part of Shiga citizens.
